Rest In Peace

Chapter 5

Trowa woke with a start as his bedroom door was slammed open. He sat up in bed and searched the room quickly. No one had entered. At first, he thought it was Duo playing games, but soon dismissed the ideal. If Duo had returned, he would have heard him. Though the Latin was starting to fall asleep, the engine of the jeep would have waken him.

His thoughts were interrupted as he heard the floor creaking, as if someone was inside the cabin, sneaking around. He quickly slid off the bed and reached between the mattress to retrieve a gun that Heero had put there earlier in the week. After double checking to make sure it was loaded, Trowa began the pursuit of the intruder. He only walked when the other person did, and stopped as the other did. This way the enemy wouldn't hear his follower. It seemed as if the trespasser was in the main room, looking around. The creaking stopped as the Gundam pilot reached the entrance to the main room.

He listened for any kind of sound that the unknown visitor could make, but only heard silence. Preparing to shoot, Trowa turned and faced the intruder, gun aimed and ready to kill. . .but there wasn't anyone there. Confusion washed over the boy as he searched the entire room. There was only one way in and out of the room, and Trowa was blocking it. There wasn't really any where to hide, since all it contained was two chairs, a fireplace, and a coffee table. The room was completely silent. He couldn't even hear the birds chirping outside the closed window.

Without warning, the floor started creaking again, this time it sounded as if someone was running across it. Before Trowa could realize where it was coming from, the front door slammed open. The sudden sound startled the soldier and he looked to find the source of it opening. There wasn't anyone there. Completely baffled, he dashed outside and looked around. The woods only bared the song of birds singing to the day. The cabin was hidden in the thickest part of the woods, but the door opened only a second ago. There was no possible way someone could disappear into the woods that quickly. Something wasn't right. As if to prove this, the hot midday sun took a freezing chill.

"Quatre?" Trowa looked around, hoping to catch a glimpse of the blonde. He checked the window for a reflection, but only found his. He then went back inside to check the main room's window and mirror above the mantle. It wasn't until he turned to go back outside that he noticed the footprints on the cabin floor. They were of someone who had bare wet feet, yet it wasn't raining outside. Looking down the hall proved that Quatre's spirit started in Trowa's bedroom, but they didn't lead into the main room as believed. Instead, they lead to the room that Heero once had. . .then outside.

Slipping his gun in his usual hiding spot, Trowa ran from the cabin. Something told him this had something to do with the lake. His instincts were on target. As he approached the lake, he found the glowing green eyes again. He kneeled at the water's edge and peered down into the pool of reflections. The bottom wasn't visible and he wondered how deep it was. He didn't have much time to ponder the question as Quatre appeared under the surface. The Arab placed his hand against the water. Wanting more than anything to touch the love of his life again, Trowa placed his own hand over Quatre's. The next instant, with surprising force, Quatre pulled the taller pilot into the water. He then proceeded to drag Trowa further down into the lake. The living boy was taken by surprise when dragged headlong into the water, so he didn't get a chance to get a proper breath for the descent.

As if sensing this, the blonde stopped and turned to face his companion. He pressed their lips together and Trowa was filled with oxygen. They continued further toward the lake bottom. Trowa held on tightly to the small hand. He couldn't believe how solid it felt for it to be a ghost. As he stared at the form before him, he wondered where they were going, and what they would find. The lake was a lot deeper than he imagined. Come to find out, there was a hidden cave under the lake shore. It was there that the treasure was discovered. . . .Sandrock. . .the Gundam's eyes were glowing brightly in the dark cave as if lighting the way.

With Quatre's soul as an oxygen mask, Trowa was able to raise the resting Gundam. Once on dry land, Quatre disappeared, leaving Trowa to investigate on his own. The hatch to the cockpit slowly opened. Trowa stood on it and waited for the three protection walls to open and reveal the cockpit. However, he didn't expect to have water and a body lunging out at him.

The two pilots tumbled from the hatch and landed roughly on the ground. Trowa stared down at the white face of the body that broke his fall. He scrambled to his feet and studied the corpse closer. It was definitely Quatre. His flesh was flushed from the water that was trapped inside the cockpit with him. The pale body was completely naked. It was evident that the blonde had been beaten to death. Tears burned Trowa's eyes as he kneeled next to the dead body. He turned Quatre onto his back and lightly ran his index finger along the ice cold features. Blinking back the tears, he hesitantly opened the victim's mouth to find that the tongue was gone. Tears now falling, he held Quatre close to him, wondering how anyone could do this to such a kind person. He crushed the lifeless body against his own.

"I'll find out who did this. . ." He whispered to the blonde. "They will pay." He pulled back to study the face again. It was then that he noticed a shadow falling over him. Before he had a chance to react, he felt something strike the back of his neck.

Trowa woke with a start. He sat up quickly in bed and studied the night filled room. Was it a dream? He felt the back of his neck. There was a small bump as proof that it wasn't. Suddenly, he heard the jeep pull up. The headlights washed over the small room as Duo pulled into the shed.

He's just now returning? He looked down at his clothes. They were dry. He slid off the bed and was greeted by lightheadedness. Using the wall for support, he walked over to the window to find Duo carrying two big brown bags of food. The American looked over at him and narrowed his violet eyes.

"You gonna stand and watch, or are you gonna help?" Trowa didn't respond as he turned and headed outside to help his comrade. As he walked down the hall, he noticed that the footprints were gone. "About time." Duo scorned and shoved the overstuffed bags into Trowa's arms. "That's the last time I go shopping by myself." He griped and grabbed the two remaining bags, then locked the jeep. They walked into the cabin in silence. "Well, since I went shopping, you can put everything away." He declared and rummaged through the bags. He pulled out a carton of his favorite ice cream, grabbed a spoon, and sat on the kitchen counter. "So how long you think Wu Fei and Heero will be gone?"

"Few days."

"Can your ass stand the neglect?" Duo laughed as he licked the spoon clean before diving back in for more. "So who's bigger? Quatre or Heero?. . .Probably Heero, or else you wouldn't let him fuck you so much. . .then again, Heero knows what he doing. You never got a chance to properly train Quatre, did you?" Trowa avoided any kind of contact with the American. He kept his back to Duo as he worked. "Why Quatre ever wanted you is beyond me. He deserved better. Someone that wouldn't have cheated on him." Trowa knew what Duo was trying to do. "Heero deserves better too. They both must have felt sorry for you. Why else would they waste their time on a slut?. . .oh. . .wait. You're not a slut. . .you don't even get paid for your services."

The American continued talking in such a manner. Even though Trowa was acting like he was ignoring the harsh words, Duo knew that he was hearing them. While emptying the final bag, Trowa came across the receipt from the grocery store. He glanced back at Duo for a second to find that the braided boy seemed more interested in the ice cream than him. Before the attention was turned, the Latin slipped the receipt into his pocket. He then stood and headed toward the door.

"Hey, where are you going?" Trowa didn't respond.
